Art and Culture

“Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you travelled”  Mohamed

Today we put our cultural hats on and travelled to Florence or as the Italians call it Firenze. Art is everywhere in Florence, even on the streets(literally)

Our main objective was the Uffizi Gallery, previously a palace of de Medici, it is now one of the most visited galleries in the world. Apparently more than two million people visit the gallery each year and it felt like a good  proportion of them were there today.

Started out on a tour, with a guide saying insightful comments like “above you are paintings of famous men”. When she then skipped past the Botticelli room we rebelled, abandoned the tour and enjoyed wandering on our own. We gazed at art by Botticelli, Raphael, Michelangelo, Da Vinci and learnt that Ghirlandia was Michelangelo’s master and teacher. All stunning, so many treasures in one place.

Then after another delicious meal we wandered the city, via the leather markets and it was back on the train to meet the English connection in Bologna

And Megan tells me this is the car I should have hired
