Waterfalls and wine

“We wander for distraction, but we travel for fulfilment.” Hilaire Belloc
Another early morning start for a full day of history, waterfalls, riverboat and wine. Our first stop was the historic town of Sibenik. This town has a port that is not accessible to big ships and therefore remains fairly off the tourist trail and is much less crowded than Split.

Our guide on a walking tour of this little town filled our heads with fascinating facts, most of which we will forget but a few stand out……

In 1066 Sibenik was the town of the first Croat King

In 1895, Šibenik became the world’s first city with alternating current-powered street lights, these were powered by hydroelectricity. Replicas of these street lamps have been installed.

St Michaels Cathedral is made entirely of Dalmatian stone – without mortar. It is also the “Iron Bank” of Game of Thrones fame. And apparently I’m standing on the spot used to film the approach to the iron bank.

Then it was on to the national park and Krka Waterfalls. Simply stunning ! We also looked at the ancient village where the power of the water was channeled to power a millstone to grind the grain (corn, wheat etc) and a natural washing machine

We had plenty of time for swimming, no actual photos of us swimming due to the incompatibility of phones and water!

A boat trip up the river took us out of the national park and onto another pretty little village and a wine tasting.

The wine was good…. note the bottle is empty!
